So here I am today, settling back into the book. Something over 2,000 words today. I could move on with it, but I’ve got other irons in the fire, and I’m at a place where (1) my brain is a bit over-saturated on the story right now, and (2) I’m kind of in the middle of where the shit starts to get a bit more real—which means that whenever my brain is fresh and I pick this up again I’m guess progress will be a bit brisk.
It sounds good on paper, anyway.
This is a thing about writing “fast.” It’s really not that fast.
I mean, 2,000 words is about eight pages. That’s not chicken feed, but it’s really just eight pages. And while, yes, I’m going to go over them at least one more time (and, yes, there remains copy editing)—the fact is that since I know the story, I’m pretty sure that the basic gist of everything I’m writing isn’t going to wildly change on this next pass. I’ve got a mostly open calendar in front of me. I’m at just under 20K on this book, and the pace of progress is building (meaning that the first week of the project I averaged about 680 words a day, the second week it was 1,100, and this week I’m at 1,600 words a day).
I expect the whole book to be 45ishK when I’m done. There’s every chance I can finish it this month. We’ll see.
In this sense, you see, “speed” is really a factor of coming to the page every day, and then making some number of words each time. Eventually they add up.
Anyway, now I’m off to start exploring covers for another new project—a small book on short story writing I’ve been working on in the nooks and crannies of all the other projects I’ve been dealing with. I should note, also, that after doing my 1,600 words yesterday, I laid down the concept for the cover of STARGAMES–which is book seven of this series I’m working on now.
Much fun.
