After what has been a bit of a rocky summer here at the Collins Condo, I’m starting to get my feet back under myself, something I can tell is true because I’m starting to get projects rolling again.
That’s really the only problem I have with the world of indie publishing. When the wheels come off in my office, the entire car comes to a screeching halt. Such is life, though. Thank goodness Brigid was able to pull the bulk of the work on our last quite successful Kickstarter for Curveball Cursed—which we’ll be fulfilling quite soon now!
Anyway, there’s a lot beginning to happen, which I’ll talk more about in the next few weeks, I’m sure.
First up, though, is a new collection that I’m giving the wonderfully fun and mathematically quirky title 1100 Digital Stories in an Analog World. It is, naturally, a collection of the first twelve stories (1100 for my binary folks!) that appeared originally in Analog Science Fiction and Fact magazine. I’ve had the best time putting it together, and specifically in writing a series of afterwords to accompany each piece. Those bits gave me an excuse to revisit what I was doing when I wrote them, and to remember exactly much fun each of those stories are.
I tend to be a future-minded person, you know? I don’t like to live in the past. But it’s good to look back sometimes. It’s good to be able to look back and be made happy with your work.
Turns out I still love all these stories, and I’m struck by how much optimisim rides along in them. By that, I don’t mean that they are light-hearted at all (though someof them are). I mean that, while several of these stories cut a bit close to the bone at times, they are still—at their core—stories in which good is working to triumph over evil. So to speak. Back in the day I used to say that Science Fiction was the most human of the genres, and these stories are examples of what I meant by that.
I will, of course, be Kickstarting it before going wide with it, and since I’ve managed to get a preview page up, you can find more details about the book, and get notified when it launches here:
I’m stilll working on the details and getting the books proofed and fully prepared, so I’m guessing the Kickstarter will go live sometime in mid-September…which means the book will see its full release in (probably) January. So if you’re a fan of science fiction on the harder side of the divide (or just a fan of me!), and want to be the first on the block to have a copy of it, here’s your choice!
Yes, indeed, things are starting to roll again, which means the future is looking brighter.
Which makes me happy indeed.
